Tour Overview
The Rwenzori Mountains—known since antiquity as the "Mountains of the Moon"—rise to 5,109 metres on the Uganda-Congo border and are one of Africa's best-kept trekking secrets. This 8-day expedition follows the Central Circuit through a surreal landscape that changes dramatically with altitude: from lush montane forest buzzing with birdlife, through dripping bamboo zones and giant heather, to the bizarre Afro-alpine moorlands where giant lobelias and groundsels tower overhead like relics from a prehistoric world. The trek culminates at Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley, the third-highest point in Africa and one of the continent's last glaciated summits. With experienced mountain guides, porters, and well-placed huts along the route, this is a challenging but deeply rewarding adventure for fit hikers and mountaineers.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Kampala to Kasese & Trek Briefing
Depart Kampala and drive west to the town of Kasese at the foot of the Rwenzori Mountains. Check in at your hotel and attend an afternoon briefing at the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services office. Meet your mountain guide and porters, review the equipment checklist, and receive an overview of the route, weather expectations, and acclimatisation schedule. Enjoy a hearty dinner and an early night.
Day 2: Nyakalengija to Sine Hut (2,596 m)
Drive to the Nyakalengija trailhead (1,615 m) and begin the trek through lush montane forest. The trail follows the Mubuku River valley, crossing wooden bridges and muddy paths beneath a canopy of ferns, wild bananas, and towering hardwoods. Birding is excellent—listen for Rwenzori turacos and Archer's robin-chats. Arrive at Sine Hut by late afternoon. Total hiking time: approximately 5–6 hours.
Day 3: Sine Hut to John Matte Hut (3,505 m)
Ascend through bamboo and giant heather zones where the vegetation grows increasingly otherworldly. The trail steepens as you climb through moss-laden trees and misty clearings. Arrive at John Matte Hut nestled in the upper Bujuku Valley with views of the jagged peaks above. The altitude gain today aids acclimatisation. Total hiking time: approximately 5–7 hours.
Day 4: John Matte Hut to Bujuku Hut (3,962 m)
Cross the Bigo Bog—a vast, muddy expanse of tussock grass and standing water—on boardwalks and stepping stones. Beyond the bog, the landscape transforms into the extraordinary Afro-alpine zone: giant groundsels (Dendrosenecio) and giant lobelias rise like alien sculptures from the misty moors. Reach Bujuku Hut with the glacial Lake Bujuku shimmering below Mount Baker. Total hiking time: approximately 5–6 hours.
Day 5: Bujuku Hut to Elena Hut (4,541 m)
Today's steep ascent passes through rocky terrain and increasingly sparse vegetation. Scramble through the Scott Elliot Pass and traverse exposed ridges with dramatic views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers. Arrive at Elena Hut, the highest shelter on the mountain and your launch point for the summit bid. Rest, hydrate, and prepare your gear for an alpine start. Total hiking time: approximately 4–5 hours.
Day 6: Summit Margherita Peak (5,109 m) & Descend to Kitandara Hut
Depart Elena Hut before dawn with headlamps and crampons. Cross the Stanley Glacier (conditions permitting) and scramble the final rocky section to Margherita Peak—the highest point of the Rwenzori and the third-highest summit in Africa. Take in the breathtaking panorama of glaciers, peaks, and cloud-filled valleys below. Descend via the same route to Elena Hut, then continue down to Kitandara Hut (4,023 m) beside the twin Kitandara Lakes. Total hiking time: approximately 8–10 hours.
Day 7: Kitandara Hut to Guy Yeoman Hut (3,261 m)
Descend through the Freshfield Pass and down through giant heather and bamboo zones. The descent is steep in sections but the improving weather and returning birdsong lift spirits. Arrive at Guy Yeoman Hut in the afternoon with time to relax, wash in the stream, and celebrate the summit over a hot meal. Total hiking time: approximately 6–7 hours.
Day 8: Guy Yeoman Hut to Nyakalengija & Return to Kampala
Complete the descent through montane forest back to the Nyakalengija trailhead. Receive your summit certificate and say farewell to your guides and porters. Transfer to Kasese for lunch, then continue to Kampala (or Entebbe) arriving by evening. Alternatively, overnight in Kasese and transfer the following day.
